THOUGHTS FROM PASTOR DENNIS BAILEY ------
August 9, 2010 Newsletter --
“Come to me all you are heavy laden and burdened down and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11: 28)
I was visiting someone in one of our care facilities the other day and went by an office and on the wall was a big sign, framed in wood, which simply said “RELAX”.
I passed it by and had to go back. The young lady in the office looked up and I said, “I like your sign” as I pointed to it. She just smiled as if she understood and I went on about my way. But I’ve been thinking about that sign lately. I don’t think I ever got that message growing up. If you’re like me, most of us were told to strive and to strive harder, to be “go getters”, and to never let down. Those are good words when we are called to persevere and to do the very best we can, yet we cannot (especially as Christian believers) forget the need to form in our character the ability to relax, to be at peace, and to be calm in all things. Even when we are going about in our daily lives!
I know a man who has stenciled the word “Relax” on the head of the driver he uses to play golf so it will be the first thing he sees. He says it reminds him to slow down, relax, and not try so hard. It seems, that if there is wisdom there for the golfer or the young lady in the office, there might be wisdom in it for us who are believers.
Jesus calls us to form, not only disciplines of perseverance and hard work, but also the ability to “relax” and to be at peace in our soul, our hearts, and our minds. Can you and I do this? I hope so…because if we don’t learn to “rest and relax” in Jesus we will miss the sweetness of His peace. Let’s ask God to help us!
God bless you…..Pastor Bailey
UPCOMING SERMONS
Aug. 29 - Luke 14: 1; 7-11 “Choosing the Best Seat
Jesus shares the need for His followers to be humble in heart. He, himself, lived a life of putting others above Himself. In Jesus’ eyes the greatest among us are those who live a life of humility.
Sept. 5 - Luke 13: 6-9 “Making a Difference” Holy Communion
This Sunday we will begin our fall season by learning about the emphasis Jesus gives on “bearing fruit” in our lives. Our words, actions, character, and attitudes are very important to God. For us to understand this and to live it out is a priority for Jesus. What kind of “fruit” are you bearing for Christ?
