United Methodist Women (UMW)
UMW President: Jewel Kline

United Methodist Women

Largest denominational faith organization for women with over 800,000 member worldwide with a mission to foster spiritual growth, development of leaders, and advocating for justice. Each year, United Methodist Women members prepare for faithful living and action by studying up to three mission studies focusing on a spiritual growth topic, geographic area and a current issue. Members raise up to $20 million yearly for programs and projects related to women, children and youth in the United States and in more than 100 countries around the world.

The organized unit of United Methodist Women (UMW) shall be a community of women whose PURPOSE is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ: to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.

The theme for 2015 is Welcomed by God; Welcoming All.

Welcome!   As a noun, the word has many meanings.   But as a verb its manifestations are countless.   God is the originator of welcome.   In the beginning of biblical time, God welcomed us into creation and into existence.   We experienced the same love and welcome in Jesus Christ.   This welcome is  not only to make us wanted and accepted, but it is also an invitation to share in God's work.   God's welcome motivates us and compels us to extend the same welcome to others.   We are transformed as we express welcome.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE – from Sheri Watson, Southwest District President

2015 made quite an entry with strong winds blowing, bitter cold temperatures , yet, also presenting to us some beautiful snow. I do hope this finds you well, without suffering from the flu or the colds that come with winter in the Midwest.

I love the Advent and Christmas time, but now I am ready as the new year begins and we start getting into the new programs and activities that are planned.

I know that many units are concerned with the number of active members they have as some of their faithful members begin to feel they are aging and not able to do what they did in the past. We as active United Methodist Women know the wonderful work United Methodist Women do around the world, and the women and children that benefit greatly from the work we do. Many of us have belonged to United Methodist Women for many years and joined because we wanted to be a part of largest faith-based organization for women in the world and to offer help in any way we can.

I also believe that our younger women today are a bit hesitant to step forward and join any organization. Yet, the organizations that send invitations to prospective members and invite them to join are beginning to grow.

I ask that you and your units think about holding an informative and fun activity which would include a written invitation to join United Methodist Women. Let them know there are no membership fees or strict guidelines they need to follow. Please also remember no need not belong to the United Methodist Church, or any church, to be a United Methodist Woman. All are welcome!

I feel so fortunate to have had a mother that was such a United Methodist Women supporter that she never gave up promoting United Methodist Women to my sister and me. We joined, and since then have had our paths cross with many wonderful, faithful United Methodist Women. I will do anything I can do to help UMW to not just sustain itself, but to GROW!

Blessings to all as you go forward in 2015! Sheri Watson
